Former Addicts Discuss
'Life Without Chemistry'
"Life Without Chemistry" will
be the topic for a panel discussion
with five former drug users and
adds from the New York City
area. Monday at 8 p.m., in the
South Meeting Room of Newcomb
Hall.
The panel, sponsored by
the public lecture and discussion
agency of Madison Hall, will
give a brief presentation based on
their own experience with drugs,
and then will field questions presented
by the audience.
Sam Manly, Executive Director
of Madison Hall, said that all
interested members of the University
and Charlottesville communities
are invited to attend, and that
he hopes there will be a real
dialogue between panelists and the
audience.
Mr. Manly said that he does not
know the identity of all the
members of the panel, but that all
are expected to be students or
former students from New York
City. One member of the panel, he
said, is an accomplished musician
who holds a master's degree from
the Julliard School in New York.
The panelists, he said, will be
encouraged to speak personally
about their individual experiences
with drugs, and will especially be
encouraged to explain why they no
longer use them and how they
stopped.
He said that he hopes this sort
of personal exposure will prompt
persons in the audience to speak
equally personally about their own
views and experience with drugs, so
that the panelists will be able to
react creatively. The panel is not
expected to deal technically with
the subject.
Mr. Manly also announced that
the panelists are participating in
visits to local high schools and
junior high schools in Charlottesville
and Albemarle County.
The meeting on Monday night
will be their only appearance in the
University community, although
students are invited to attend all
other public meetings at which they
are scheduled to speak.
