Basketball Nets Increase
Athletic Revenues Increasing
Increased revenues including a
25 per cent boost in football and
basketball game receipts at the
University are noted in a fiscal
report prepared by Athletic Director
Steve Sebo.
An analysis of the athletic
department report for the fiscal
year which ended June 30, shows
that total revenues rose from
$468,648 in 1968 to $554,417 in
1969, an increase of $85,769. This
year's income is 32 per cent higher
than the figure for the 1966-67
fiscal year which saw a decrease in
athletic revenues. Expenditures for
the past fiscal year rose to
$554,441 which is $83,845 more
than was spent the previous year.
Mr. Sebo said that a breakdown
of revenue figures shows that
receipts from football games lose
25 per cent to $344,524 last year.
An increase is also noted in
basketball revenues which climbed
from $27,569 in 1968 to $34,722
in 1969.
In the case of basketball,
revenues had dropped in 1967-68
and the 1968-69 figure represents a
25 per cent increase, Mr. Sebo said.
Other revenue increases noted by
the University athletic director
were the amount received from
student athletic fees which rose
from $149,840 in 1968 to
$156,490 in 1969 and gymnasium
rental which increased from $1,602
in 1968 to $2,436 in fiscal 1969.
The major portion of disbursements
consists of outlays for
personal services including salaries
for athletic department staff and
clerical help and contractual services
including maintenance, supplies,
medical care for players,
travel, utilities and communication.
In addition, $25,000 is being
provided toward construction of
much-needed track field facilities.
Mr. Sebo's report, recently filed
with the State Budget Office in
Richmond, shows that five 1968
me football games produced
proceeds totaling $285,591 from
which $115,321 was deducted as
opponents' shares and $19,243 for
game expenses.
The home football game showing
the largest revenue in 1968 was
the University of South Carolina
game which produced revenues
amounting to $70,123. Out-of-town
games producing the most
revenue for the University in 1968
were the games played at Purdue
University ($74,397) and Navy
($37,490).
Fight home basketball games,
three less than the preceding year -
produced revenues totaling
$32,014, while expenses amounted
to $7,756. The biggest home game
was against the University of North
Carolina, producing $10,124 in
revenue.
