Government Seeks Aid
In War On Pollution

Hoping to "involve young people
in the struggle against pollution,"
the Federal Water Pollution
Control Administration (FWPCA)
will stage a youth gathering in
Richmond this December 30.

The "Great Grey Ice Gathering"
will combine the elements of a rock
festival and a government meeting
in an attempt to "stimulate student
interest in the problems of controlling
pollution in the environment,
specifically water pollution," according
to Randall H. Simmons, a
first-year graduate student and
organizer of the event.

The gathering, which will be
held on Northern Boulevard in
Richmond, from 1 to 5 p.m., is part
of a program of national meetings
to be held December 29 and 30.
The meetings will be co-sponsored
by the Student Council on
Pollution in the Environment
(SCOPE), a newly formed
organization to advise Secretary of
the Interior Walter Hickel on the
thinking of young people. Mr.
Simmons is a co-chairman of
SCOPE for the Middle-Atlantic
States.

The gathering, which will in Mr.
Simmons' words be a
"social-educational event," will
feature several acid-rock groups and
FWPCA officials. The officials plan
to initiate a dialogue on the
problem of water pollution and the
courses of action open.
