Advice, Guidance From Counselors
Benefits First-Year Men In Dorms
By Brian Siegel
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Once a first-year man leaves
home and comes to the University,
he is on his own - except for the
diligent vigilance of the counselors.
Each spring counselors are carefully
chosen competitively from a
large group of students to serve in
the counseling program. Counselors
are selected for their ability to deal
with problems, their leadership
qualities, and their general knowledge
of the University and community.
All counselors have been at the
University for a year, many for two
or more. Each corridor of students,
or group of two suites, has its own
counselor.
The first-year man will meet
with his counselor often during this
first week of school. Remember, he
will be with you the entire year. It
will be up to you to go to him if
you seek advice.
Counselors are oriented to help
their students with a wide range of
problems. Keeping civility in the
dorms, listening to problems, giving
advice, or teaching - the counselors
are there if you need them.
The students should also know
and make use of the dorm's
resident advisor. He is in the dorm
to help students with their academic
problems. Choosing courses,
pre-registration, and registration are
upon you at once.
There is also at least one
counselor residing in each of the
men's dorms serving other than
first-year men. A student counseling
program is also in effect in the
women's houses.
