1,000 Students Sign Petition
Praising McCarthy Efforts
More than one thousand University
students have signed a
petition commending Senator
Eugene J. McCarthy for his decision
to become a candidate for
the Democratic Presidential
nomination.
According to Michael H.
Ebner, who directed the petition
campaign on the Grounds,
this is part of an effort by the
statewide McCarthy-for-President
Committee to gain 10,000 signatures.
The campaign is also
being conducted in Norfolk,
northern Virginia, and Roanoke.
This weekend the Charlottesville
McCarthy committee will
be seeking signatures at the
Barracks Road Shopping Center,
in an effort to double the number
solicited by the student
committee. Robert Burke, a
graduate student, and Lawrence
Cranberg, a physics professor,
will direct the community effort.
On the eve of the New
Hampshire primary, which will
be held on March 12, the petitions
will be presented to Senator
McCarthy's campaign headquarters
in that state, as a measure
of out-of-state commendation
of his effort.
The petition reads in full:
"We, the undersigned, believing
that there are crucial issues
which must be debated in this
election year, commend Senator
Eugene J. McCarthy for his decision
to become a candidate for
the Democratic Presidential
nomination."
