Va. Debaters Finish Season
With Wins At Morgan State

Winding up a successful season,
the University debaters
placed three speakers in the top
ten last weekend in a debate attended
by 22 schools.

About 100 speakers participated
in the debate, which was
held at Morgan State University
in Baltimore, Md. Debaters from
the University ranked first, third,
and eighth in the tournament,
and one team for the affirmative
ranked fifth.

Harry R. Howell, a second-year
man, was awarded top
ranking, with John Cody and
James Poe ranking third and
eighth, respectively. The debaters
participated in nine tournaments
this semester and were the hosts
of one in early November.

Twice, debaters John Cody
and Harry Howell were named
the outstanding speakers of
tournaments, and together were
ranked the fifth team of the
Morgan tournament.

Second-year man Dennis
Unkovic captured tenth place in
a tournament at the University
of North Carolina.

Earlier this semester the debaters
battled Princeton here on
the merits of coeducation. Next
semester they will sponsor more
debates with Ivy League schools
on current topics, such as the
sanctions against Rhodesia and
the war in Vietnam.

The debaters are coached by
Stanford P. Gwin, of the dept.
of speech and drama. Mr. Gwin
is assisted by law students Webster
Golden and George Bostick.
