Press Covers Bloody Side
cooperation of Diem and the
U.S. before 1963
He then said that the
American press tended to
ignore these factors in favor of
the "bloody side of the
war." This coverage, and the
impression it gave to
Americans, influenced the
Kennedy administration on
Diem too much," he
commented.
Mr. Nolting was withdrawn
from his position on Aug. 15,
1963, two and one-half months
before General Thieu led the
attack on the Diem regime in
Saigon.
The former ambassador
attributed his release to his
support of the Diem regime as
"not only constitutional and
legal, but also the best
available."
Mr. Nolting's address was
one of a Student Legal Forum
series examining American
foreign policy.
The former Ambassador is
currently
Diplomat-in-Residence here
but he is no newcomer to the
school.
