Last Minute Goal

Soccer Squad Booted By Blue Devils

By STEVE GASKE

Yesterday afternoon the
Virginia soccer team suffered
its first loss of the season in a
crushing 1-0 game against Duke
at the new soccer field.

With a league record of
1-1-1, this loss may prove to be
the difference at the end of the
season between winning and
losing the ACC crown.

However, Virginia played a
very good game in what was
their television debut of the
season. Coach Jim Stephens
commented after the game
that, "we had a lot of good
opportunities in the game, but
we missed them."

Midway through the first
half the Cavs came very close
to scoring when a hooked
corner kick was curving into
the goal. It was only by the
luck of a good head by one of
the Blue Devil fullbacks that
saved the goal.

Late in the half Duke
missed a head by hitting the
ball less than a foot over the
crossbar from in front of the
net.

After a lethargic first half
for Virginia that was
dominated by Duke until a Cav
surge of dominance late in the
period, Virginia came out
shooting in the second half.

Although unable to get a
shot off, one of Virginia's
better chances in the game
came when the Duke goalie
fumbled the ball and had it
kicked away from his hands.
With the ball in close and the
goalie out of the goal the Cavs
were unable to capitalize on
the situation.

Fourth-year man John
Gaughen missed on an open
shot when he got the ball
about eight yards out to the
left of the goal and kicked the
ball across the face of the goal
and wide to the right.

By far the Cavs best
opportunity of the day was a
centering pass from Noel Belli
to Ted Knetzger where the
Duke goal tender couldn't get
at the ball. After several shots
off the fullback's body the ball
finally was deflected out of
bounds.

Coming into the last few
minutes of the game, Virginia
had controlled the ball much
of the half, but then the tide
turned to the Blue Devils.
All-ACC forward Paco
Guterrez dribbled past the
defense and was open for what
looked like a sure goal until
Cavalier Jay Ziehl made an
outstanding slide to keep the
ball out.

With just over a minute
remaining to play and the score
tied at 0-0, Duke had a long
throw in from the sideline.
Blue Devil Dave DesMarais
headed the ball just over the
straining fingertips of
second-year goalie Scott
Poyton and into the lower right
corner of the net.
