Dorm Counselors Versus Law Enforcers

the dorms, if there is a "gay"
problem in the dorms, as has
been rumored, enforcement of
conditions by the counselors
and residents is certainly not
going to help the situation. The
counselors and residents are in
the dorms to provide a
sympathetic and understanding
ear to first year men and
upperclassmen who live in the
dorms. They are there to help
them face their problems, to
help them work them out and
adjust to college life; they are
not here to assess $10 dollar
fines for failure to obtain a
permit for a refrigerator that
will hardly hod ten cans of
beer.

I submit that Mr. Titus and
Mr. Main do not understand
the concept of in loco parentis.
The average parent of a college
age child does not consider
himself a policeman; he
considers himself an advisor, a
confidant. The "loco" in in
loco parentis which is a Latin
idiom means "in place of." I've
come to the conclusion that
Mr. Titus and Mr. Main think
that the word "loco" is
Spanish and means "crazy." If
they considered themselves in
loco parentis, their Spanish
translation may very well be
accurate.
