favor expansion, but also saw
more disadvantages in a larger
University than did whites.

the single most significant
factor influencing attitudes
towards increasing enrollment.
In all three samples,
respondents with more
education were consistently
less favorable to expansion.
When respondents were
asked to give their opinions
about the quality of the
University on a scale ranging
from "one of the 2 or 3 leading
universities in the United
States" to "below average,"
the predominant response in all
three populations was "one of
the 20 or 30 leading
universities in the United
States."
