West Promoted
Coach Jim West, head
basketball coach and head of
the Service Physical Education
Program at the University, has
been appointed Assistant
Director of Athletic Programs,
the athletic department
announced yesterday.
In his new position, Mr.
West will be an assistant to
head football coach Don
Lawrence in charge of the
recruiting program and the
administrative end of the
football program. He will
continue as head baseball
coach.
George Edwards, head
wrestling coach, will take over
Mr. West's duties as head of the
physical education program.
Mr. West has been at the
University since 1961. He holds
a Master's degree in physical
education and took his degree
from the University in 1958.
At present he is working on a
doctorate in counseling.
Director of Athletic
Programs Eugene F. Corrigan,
in announcing the
appointment, said that the
University is "extremely
fortunate to have a man of
Jim's calibre to take over this
vital assignment," and
characterized Mr. West as one
who is "respected in the
University community and
throughout the state."
"This is another giant step
in the right direction for our
football program," noted Mr.
Lawrence, who called Mr. West
"a man who gets things done."
Mr. West's baseball teams
have had much success in
recent years, including a 20-9
record last year, the most wins
in Cavalier history.
Mr. Edwards has been head
wrestling coach for four years.
His teams have finished second
in the ACC for the last three
years.
