Fioravanti Relates
Concert Problem
communication" and "resolve the
problem of societies sponsoring
conflicting concerts."
Mr. Fioravanti, however, was
not in favor of the one agency plan.
He said that his society, the PK
society, would probably be
absorbed and the resulting
organization would not have the
freedom which his society does. He
added that competition between
the various organizations produces
better concerts.
The cost of producing a concert
is huge, not only in the fee of the
act, but also the publicity, tickets,
sound equipment, and the 10 per
cent cut taken by University Hall.
According to one person
interviewed, the money which goes
to University Hall is used to pay for
the building. He hoped that after it
was paid off that student
organizations would not have to
pay for its use. But, he added that
there is still a fee charged for the
use of Memorial Gymnasium.
Should there be any "profit"
from the concerts, it is given back
to the University in various forms.
The PK society donates money to
the Student Activities Fund ($500
last year), and to scholarship funds.
The University Union uses most of
its receipts to cover losses in its
other branches, such as the Artist's
Series, the movies shown in
Newcomb Hall, the travel
committee, the blood drive,
exhibits, and the Fine Arts Contest.
Occasionally, the societies
purposely take a loss. Last year's
concert on the Lawn with the Fifth
Dimension was jointly sponsored
by the PK-German society and the
University Union. They were in a
position to take a loss, so they
presented the concert strictly for
the benefit of the students and
faculty, and shared the $1800 loss.
Rather than present no concert at
all during Christmas parties, the
Union sponsored the Strawberry
Alarm Clock and took a loss of
$4000.
