ESU Offers Grant
The Charlottesville chapter of the
English-Speaking Union is now
accepting applications for its $900
Lily Dabney Summer School
Scholarship to attend one of the
six-week courses offered by the
British universities' summer
schools.
Among those eligible for this
scholarship competition are
University instructors and graduate
students. The $900 grant will be
awarded to the candidate who, in
the judgement of the scholarship
committee, is best qualified to
further his understanding of culture
and qualities common to English-speaking
people and to help others
gain similar understanding through
teaching, writing, or other means.
The grant will cover ocean
transportation, board, residence,
tuition, and about $100 for
incidental expenses for attendance
at one of the British universities'
summer schools.
Courses in the program will
begin July 7 and will run through
August 15. The University of
Birmingham will offer "Shakespeare
and Elizabethan Drama" and the
University of London will offer
"Twentieth Century English
Literature." "History, Literature,
and the Arts of Seventeenth
Century England" will be taught at
the University of Oxford and
"Eighteenth Century Britain:
History, Literature, and
Philosophy" will be given at the
University of Edinburgh.
Those students interested should
send a letter of application, stating
their age, subjects taught, writings
published or in preparation,
extracurricular activities, previous
travel in the United States and
abroad, and any other information
they feel would be helpful to the
committee making the selection.
Letters must be typed and
postmarked before February 21
and sent to: Scholarship Committee,
English-Speaking Union, Box 3003,
University Post Office,
Charlottesville.
