Upward Bound Aid Fund Formed

To help needy students who
graduate from the local Upward
Bound program to continue their
education at the college level, an
Upward Bound Scholarship Fund
has been established with prominent
local citizens as trustees.

The local Upward Bound
program was started at the University
in the summer of 1967.
Its purpose is to help high school
students with poor academic
and economic backgrounds to
better themselves academically
and to enter college.

All of the students in the
present program are from high
schools located in the counties
of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene,
Louisa, Nelson, Buckingham,
and the city of Charlottesville.

All of these students are presently
preparing for college admission,
and national figures indicate
that better than 88% of
Upward Bound students make a
successful showing in the first
year of college.

Although many schools do
have scholarship funds for these
students, in some cases these
funds are not adequate to cover
all of a student's expenses, or
they are paid to the student later
in the year, necessitating a fund
of money available for the student
when he first enters college.

To help these students stay in
college, money is needed for this
fund. Students and faculty who
wish to contribute should make
their checks payable to Upward
Bound Scholarship Fund and
send it to 100 Randall Building
at the University. All contributions
are tax deductible.
