University Year for Action
Seeks Student Applicants

Interested students are
encouraged to apply
immediately for participation
in the University Year for
Action (UYA) program next
year.

Nine University students
selected from the Schools of
Architecture, Education,
Nursing, and the College have
just completed two weeks of
pre-service training in
preparation for joining seven
other students who are already
in the University year for
ACTION.

Two student nurses will be
working in the delivery of
health care in Greene County,
a rural, low-income area just
north of Albemarle County.
Another student will work
with the mothers of children in
a Charlottesville Head Start
program. One will use her
journalism talents to focus on
the needs of those with
sub-standard urban housing
problems.

Alcoholism

Three students will work
with alcoholism problems of
low-income people both in
Charlottesville and in
surrounding counties. One will
work with high school
dropouts to provide
educational and vocational
counseling, and another
student will work with
domestic problems on an
emergency and referral basis.

UYA directors Louise
Walton and Edith Kelley are in
the process of recruiting and
selecting up to 25 students for
the fall program. Both
undergraduate and graduate
students are eligible to apply.
Students placed in the UYA
program must work out a
satisfactory credit plan with
their faculty advisors prior to
entering training. Students
receive stipends for their
activities.

Fall Projects

The fall projects will be
related to poverty problems
which agencies have not been
able to solve and which can be
matched with University
resources and faculty and
student scholarly interests. It
offers individualized
experience-based curricula for
students selected for the
program.

Interested students and
faculty are urged to stop by
the UYA office located at 113
Peabody Hall sometime during
the next two weeks to obtain
further information on the
program. The office will be
open between 10 a.m. and 3
p.m.
