Injuries Nag Davis

all-time Virginia records, he
was impressive enough to merit
a pre-season nod as an ACG
candidate.

His super-season was never
realized. After a succession of
interceptions, losses, and
injuries, he was benched after
only three contests.

Although Davis has thrown
only one game pass since Oct.
7, he rejects the notion of any
rift between Lawrence and
himself. "I'm to the point
where I can talk to him about
anything," Davis says. "If I'm
dissatisfied I can go talk
Coach Lawrence with no
reservations at all."

Davis rejects the thought of
firing Lawrence as a result of
his two losing seasons, as being
"stupid." Even more noxious
would be the subsequent hiring
of Sonny Randle of East
Carolina as head coach, who
Davis has heard to be one of
"the most bigoted rascals
around."

Rumors seem to hassle Davis
between games as much as
defensive backs on the field
Whispers have circulated
around the University
concerning a four wheel gift
from an alumnus ("No way in
e world. They don't do stuff
that around here"), a
wedding during his freshman
year ("I ain't married and I
ain't happy"), and a possible
transfer to Norfolk State
("There's nothing down there
for me")

His chance of starting
against Wake Forest this
Saturday practically nil, Davis
is very willing to forget this
season's frustrations and look
ahead. "I can pretty much
guarantee a winning season if
I'm quarterback," he states
confidently. "There's nothing
in the world that can be
thrown against me next year
that I won't know."
