Basketball Premier Tonight

Jim Hobgood Will Shoot For White Team In Orange And Blue Game

Football will yield the
spotlight for a few hours
tonight as the 1972-73 Cavalier
basketball team makes it
public debut in the annual
Orange and Blue Game.

Each year an intra squad
scrimmage is staged to give
Wahoo fans a chance to assess
and evaluate their team. The
varsity players are divided into
two six-man squads, and they
play a game under actual
conditions. Hopefully, one
of those conditions will be a
full house of wild spectators.
Coach Bill "Hoot" Gibson says
that "I would like to see our
fans respond with an ACC
atmosphere, a packed house. It
will show the team that our
fans are behind them and it
will give the team an
opportunity to get accustomed
to playing before a crowd."

Mr. Gibson has divided the
varsity fairly evenly into two
groups. The "Home" team,
wearing white home uniforms,
will be captained by
fourth-year sharpshooter Jim
Hobgood.

The White team will have
the two biggest Cavs, 6-10
Lanny Stahurski and 6-8 Gus
Gerard. But after that pair,
Hobgood is the tallest at 6-4,
and there are three 6-2
guards–Al Drummond, Andy
Boninti, and Brian Tully.

It's not hard to guess who is
the captain of the "visiting"
Orange team. Fourth-year
All-American Barry Parkhill
will lead the Oranges into
battle against the taller Whites.

Along with Parkhill will be
6-8 Spencer Graham, 6-6
first-year sensation Wally
Walker, and 6-5 Bob McKeag.
In the backcourt with Parkhill
will be Steve Morris or
swingman Larry Gerry.
First-year guard Bob Sefcik
might see action for the
Oranges. Alternate Dan Bonner
will play if needed.

Assistant coaches Chip
Connor and newly-arrived Mike
Schuler will coach the Oranges
and Whites respectively. Mr.
Gibson will merely observe the
game, taking no active part.

Although the game tip-off is
at 8 tonight, there will be a
picture and autograph session
beginning at 7:15 and lasting
until approximately 7:40.
Players will be available for
exposure to shutterbugs and
autograph seekers.

Contrary to circulating
rumors, students will not have
to pay to gain admittance to
the game. As with all athletic
events, students can show their
I.D. to be admitted for no
charge.

Non-students must pay
$1.50 to see the game, and
children will be admitted for
$1.00. Proceeds from the game
will go into a fund for
basketball recruiting.

Conducted under NCAA
rules, the game will have two
normal 20-minute halves, and
players will be called for fouls,
leaving the game on the fifth
foul. There will be no special
rules or gimmicks.

Neither coach is willing to
comment on the strategy he
will employ, and there were no
predictions on the final
outcome. But all parties
connected with the game
expressed the hope that U-Hall
would be full to the brim. It
would be a great psychological
boost for the team to play in
the deafening roar of "ACC
Atmosphere".

In addition, the game will
allow fans to decide for
themselves if this year's team
can accomplish the feats of last
year's 21-7 crew, which lost
four of its first six players.
