Stickmen Eye National Title

Twenty five lettermen and a
total turnout of fifty-one greeted
lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel at the
opening of practice Thursday.
Thiel, in his second year at Virginia,
has the hob of defending the
national championship which his
1970 squad shared with Johns
Hopkins and Navy.

Starters returning from last
year's title team are goalie Al Hirsh,
defensemen Bruce Mangels and
Tom Dawes, attackmen Jay
Connor, Tom Duquette and Rick
Beach, at midfielder Bob Proutt.
Other top mid-field returnees are
Pete Eldridge, George Turner, Steve
Nauss, Jim Ulman, Jeff Pienack,
Dick Proutt and Sandy Archibald
(sidelined last year by injuries).
Duquette was a second team
All-American last year and Eldridge
rated honorable mention.

"Almost Irreplaceable"

Missing from last year's squad
are Co-Captains Jim Potter (first
team All-american) and Charles
Rullman (second team
All-American) and first team
All-American defenseman Doug
libert. "They are almost
irreplaceable", said Coach Thiel
recently, "but with seven starters
returning and several top freshman
prospects we hope to be
competitive for the championship
gain this year. The new playoff
system will make it more difficult
this year."

Opener On March 13

The playoff system will
culminate in a championship game
to be played at Hofstra June 5.
Virginia's first game is with
powerful Mt. Washington Club
March 13 in Baltimore.
