Ruggers In Tourney

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Coming off a big win over the
Philadelphia Club, the Virginia
Rugby A side travels to Richmond
tomorrow for the Richmond Invitational
Tournament.

The tourney, which will run
Saturday and Sunday, boasts a field
of only four squads. Besides the
Cavaliers the other teams participating
are the Washington Club, the
Richmond Club and Duke.

Opposition

Washington, which bested the A
side in the fall, fell to Virginia 9-0
just prior to the Virginia quad's
British tour.

The Richmond Club (not to be
confused with the James River Club
who Virginia easily beat in the fall)
is a private club, as is Washington.
Richmond has several former college
ruggers among its ranks.

Duke, a school club like Virginia,
is relatively inexperienced, in
the scrum, but is supposed to have
a set of fleet backs.

Healthy again alter a ash of
injuries. Virginia will be trying to
improve on their 2-0-1 spring mark.
Eagerly awaited this weekend is the
return of wing Peter Schmidt who
dazzled the throngs in England with
a pair of fifty yard penalty kicks.

Home May 9

Club president Terry Daniel
would like to thank Virginia fans
for turning out nicely for the home
matches. Though the A team will
be away from Nameless Field until
May 9, the Turques face a weak
VMI A team Sunday afternoon.

Daniel, in looking ahead to the
weekend of May 9 (Commonwealth
Cup), urges the support of the
entire University community for
this event.

Teams participating include
Brown, Yale, Notre Dane, Princeton,
and Georgia. Also competing
will be Michigan, the Toronto Old
Boys, and Virginia.

Defending champion Old Blue
(New York) has opted not to
defend the Cup.
