Thinclads Run UR

By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

A three meet unbeaten string is
at stake this afternoon for the
Cavalier track team as the thinclads
open their Easters Weekend with a
roll to Richmond for a dual meet
with the University of Richmond's
Spiders at Pitt Field. The running
events appear to be the crucial
factor for the Cavaliers, as the
Spiders will throw at Virginia speed
demons like Carl Wood, one of the
world's best intermediate hurdlers,
and Larry Chewning and Chuck
Hunsicker, a formidable group of
half-milers.

Virginia will counter with
strength in the quarter mile and
sprints behind the Morris brothers
and almost "sure firsts" in field
event men Al Sinesky and Jim
Shannon. The Cavaliers will also
hope to score a lot of points in the
real long runs behind Rick Katz and
Phil Meyer, and offset Richmond's
middle distance strength, with Brew
Barron, Jerry Hart, and Greg Lane.

Wood will pose the major threat
to Virginia. The one man scoring
machine can place in a number of
field events including the high
jump, broad jump, javelin, and shot
depending on which he is put in. As
far as the running events go, he can
be counted on to win whatever he
runs in.

The Spiders have another strong
intermediate hurdler in Walker
Gillette, their All-American football
player, and this may mean Richmond
will go to Wood in the highs
and the 220 or the 440 and the
220. One thing is almost sure. He
will be anchoring the mile relay
team, which has already scored well
in outdoor meets this season, and if
the meet is close the Cavalier mile
relay quarter will have quite a job
on their hands.

The half mile and the mile will
also be close races with Richmond
featuring Chewning and Hunsicker
who have both hit 1:55 in the half.
Virginia will counter with Barron
and Hart, who both went under
1:57 last Saturday, and Lane in the
mile, who has run in the mid twenties
all season.
