Crew Club To Raise Funds
By Selling Shares Of Boat

A fund in honor of Dr. H.
Shipman Hedges, who rowed on
the Virginia Crew of 1888—the
last in the Nineteenth Century—
is being raised to purchase a shell
for the fledgling Virginia crew, now
in its second year.

The current rowing club is considered
by its members not as a
new venture but rather as a revival
of University's first sport. Today's
club involves fifteen upper classmen
and some twelve first-year
men (three of whom have rowing
experience).

The "fleet" consists of two
four-oared shells, and two eight-oared
shells. These have a little
age on them, only about thirty
years, and were donated by Washington
and Lee High School in
Arlington, Virginia.

Within the last week a launch
used for coaching was acquired on
loan from the Blue Ridge Boat
Sales until funds are raised for
purchase.

Last year's schedule included
R.P.I., East Carolina, Georgetown
University, and Howard University.
This year's schedule will
include races with the above, plus
George Washington University.

The fledgling crew definitely
needs a new eight-oared shell. This
will cost about $3000. A set of
oars were donated by Yale University;
now all that is desired is
a shell to match them.

This Saturday, at the homecoming
football game with Duke,
the two four-oared shells will be
displayed, one at each gate, to
attract contributions to purchase
a square inch of the new shell
at one dollar each. The rowing
club would appreciate any and all
contributions.
