Harriers Beat ODU
Meyer Leads Romp

By STEVE GASKE

In its last regular season meet
of the year, the Virginia cross
country team obliterated Old
Dominion, 15-49, on the
Faulkner Course, yesterday.

With the Cavaliers placing
their first six men before Old
Dominion's first man and 10
runners before ODU's third
man, the race was little more
than a warm up for the State
Meet to be held at Richmond
Saturday.

Phil Meyer missed his last
chance to break the course
record of 25:03, but without
being pushed his pace was still
fast enough to win by almost a
minute and a half.

Due to an error on the part
of the construction crew that is
clearing land for the new Law
School, the Faulkner Course
had to be altered for the meet.
Because the runners had to
circumvent a pile of debris left
on the course, 35 seconds were
added on to the times.

Following Meyer in the
sweep were Jerry Hart and
Donal Day who finished in a
tie for second with 27:17.
Although far behind Meyer,
Hart and Day ran strongly and
were alone at the finish.

Mike Pace ran a 27:35 for
fourth and Jim Steinberger
came in fifth, 13 seconds
behind Pace. Joe Rhames was
the sixth man for the Cavs.

Jim Wood was edged by Old
Dominion's first man in a close
battle for seventh as both
finished in the identical time of
28:17.

When asked about the
upcoming State meet this
weekend star runner Meyer
commented, "I think I have a
good chance to win it if I have
a good race."

Whether he wins the State or
not, Meyer will be one of the
favorites in the ACC meet the
following weekend. Reggie
McAfee of UNC is the only
runner who has beaten him this
year.
