Fistmen Lose

By Fletcher Thompson

In its initial match of the year,
the Virginia handball team was
defeated, 4-3, by the Lynchburg
YMCA team in Lynchburg recently.
Playing on regulation sized courts
for the first time this year, the
teams split in singles. Number
two man Ron Bowers took three
games to pull out a victory, while
Barry Butzer defeated his
Lynchburg opponent 21-15, 21-18
in the final single match of the day.

Dennis Kampe, playing number
one singles, and Dr. Jim Kelly both
dropped close contests. Kampe lost
to Hank Shaefer, 21-20, 21-19, while
Kelly, after splitting the first two
games, 19-21, and 21-8, succumbed,
21-20, in the rubber game.

In the decisive doubles matches
the U.Va. team of Larry Hassler
and Jim Steward was defeated in
two games while Kampe and Ed
Hannegin also lost, 5-21, 21-15,
21-15. Those two losses gave the
match to Lynchburg and negated a
convincing performance by Ron
Bowers and Barry Butzer, who
scored a 21-8, 21-17 victory.
