Cavayearling Comeback?

Virginia's Cavayearlings,
returning to action after three
week's idleness, will lock horns
with William & Mary's "best ever'
freshman football team Friday
afternoon at Scott Stadium.

When last seen our frosh was
dropping its lone decision of the
year to North Carolina. Balanced
against three victories this hardly
leaves the team with a
"disappointing" record but Coach
Al Groh was the first to admit that
the Carolina game was "not the
team's best effort."

While the coach dispensed a few
words of praise for "our best
defensive game of the year" he had
few such nostrums for the offensive
unit. Entering the UNC game with
the reputation as a potent scoring
machine the offense sputtered at
Chapel Hill, scored only twelve
points, and turned the ball over ten
times.

Team statistical leaders have
stayed fairly unchanged since the
beginning of the year. Kent Merritt,
now averaging 6.4 yards per carry,
is the top rusher and quarterback
Harrison Davis leads in total
offense. Davis' passing figures lack
a little of their pre-UNC lustre as he
suffered through a seven
interception game.

Coach Groh also announced the
voting of Gerald Mullins and Tim
Sullivan as team co-captains.

The coach also expressed respect
for the Papooses, his and the team's
final opponent. They employ a
deceptive triple-option offense and
have shown the ability to put
points on the board
