Independents Seen
In Super Conference

In the wake of all those Bittle
flying nasties we all know as
rumors, the avid football fan finds
himself wondering what will become
of the University of Texas if
it does decide to withdraw from the
Southwest Conference.

Among the ensuing ideas is that
of a newly organized "super conference"
of independents - surely an
enticing idea to the imagination-happy
sports writer. Here is our
proposal for the exciting new
gridiron "Gotham League."

Such a league could not be
complete without powerhouse independent
Notre Dame to spice
many rivalries among the members.
The presence of eastern kingpin and
nationally overlooked Penn State
could settle many eternally
debatable questions as well as giving
an international flavor to the loop.
Reeves to Alvarez has brought top
notch football to Florida State, and
the addition of this institution
along with Georgia Tech would
have the South well represented.
The Miami Hurricanes have been
compiling fine records for several
post-Mira years, and although this
school could hardly be
characterized as southern, it would
balance the league.

Other independents in the cast
which are rebuilding their programs
to a level of national
competitiveness are Syracuse and
West Virginia. These schools, along
with Georgia Tech and Miami
would fill the middle of the loop,
comprising the once-in-a-decade
delegation to the league title.
