Netters Face VPI

By Ernest Dempsey
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

For most students around the
Grounds, this weekend should
prove to be one of the most
outstanding performances of their
lives. However, for Virginia's tennis
team, Easters Weekend will be part
of a long week filled with important
ACC matches and stiff
competition.

This afternoon, Coach Gordon
Burris' netters square off against
VPI at the Lady Astor Courts.
Although Virginia is favored, Coach
Burris feels that the Gobblers are
respectable opponents. Their
gunner is Jack Burrows, who not
only plays at the number one spot
in doubles and singles, but also
doubles as coach due to the hasty
retirement of the former VPI
mentor. Mr. Burris isn't certain of
his lineup as yet, but admits that he
will probably give some key players
a rest.

The netters' supreme test takes
place on Monday afternoon with
the invasion of UNC's heralded
tennis squad. Although Coach Burris
admits that the Tarheels, who
own an 11-0 record, are the best
team in the Conference, he is not
convinced of their invincibility.
Carolina has defeated defending
Southeastern Conference champion
Tennessee as well as Clemson, last
year's ACC titleholder. Seven of the
eleven Tarheel victories were shutouts
so the Cavaliers will have to be
in top form, if they are to hat the
UNC winning streak.

Maryland will provide the opposition
for the netters on Tuesday.
The high flying Terps defeated
Cherry Blossom Festival winner
Indiana and should also give the
Cavaliers a good show.

The Cavaliers end their tiresome
week in Raleigh, N.C., one week
from today in a match with N.C.
