Netmen Victorious Over
Penn State At Keswick

Gorden Burris' Virginia tennis
team whipped Penn State yesterday
afternoon in a practice match
played at the Keswick Club.

Their first appearance of the
year, the Cavaliers jumped to a
decisive lead in the singles matches,
winning the series, 5-1. The doubles
were played at night in University
Hall on the new 'Supreme Court'
(sic!) facilities.

The Nittany Lions were able to
jump ahead by winning the first
match of the afternoon, with
Walker Shiver beating first-seeded
John Winter 6-1, 10-8. Virginia's
captain Andy Scheinman came
back quickly enough to throttle
their number-two seed Charly
Shiflett 6-2, 6-2, to tie the match,
and that was as close as the visitors
were to come all day. The
Virginians were able to win all of
the remaining matches.

In the number three position
third-year man Jeff Podesta
defeated Cliff Myers 8-6, 6-3.
Playing number four. Bob Kain
took a scare from Doug Polluck,
but was able to turn the tables in
the third set to win, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Virginia's Doug Waterman whipped
State's Tom Wright in the
fifth-seeded match 6-4, 6-2. Hal
Jones broke into the lineup for the
first time yesterday and he was able
to beat Al Umano easily, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play the team of
Scheinman and Winter edged Shiver
and Avery 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first
match, and Hal Jones and John
Mertz teamed up to blast Shiflett
and Joe Kaplan 6-3, 6-2 for a clean
sweep.
