Clay Takes
New Post
Coach George Blackburn recently
announced that Bill Clay, first year
coach at the University last
fall, has been moved up to the
varsity and will assist defensive
coordinator Don Lawrence.
Mr. Clay, 28, will be replacing
Maury Bibent who has left the
Virginia staff for a similar position
at Colorado State University.
Coach Clay came to the University
a year ago following a 6-3-1
year at Norfolk's Granby High
School. He is a native of Marianna,
Arkansas, and played his college
football at the University of Arkansas
as an offensive and defensive
tackle.
He was an assistant coach at
Granby from 1965 through 1967
and including his year as head
coach. Granby teams went 30-11-1
during his tenure. His Virginia
Cavayearlings last year went 2-2-1.
Mr. Blackburn said, "I have
observed Bill's coaching on the
practice field as well as in game
films and feel he is a sound
tactician. I am also impressed with
the fact he has played very
competitive football at Arkansas
and in the Pros and therefore
knows what it takes to win."
