Harriers Luck Turns Sour
As Wake Records Victory

By Steve Giannini

Friday afternoon the University
of Virginia's harriers fell 23-32,
to the Deacons of Wake Forest.

First-year man Brian Magoon
continued his surprising running
by placing third overall and first
on the team. Coach Onesty believes
Magoon may have had
trouble with his pace over the 4.9
mile course-some half mile shorter
than other college courses the team
has run this year. Afraid of overextending
himself against the more
experienced Wake Forest runners,
Magoon may also have held back
a little.

John Hobson from Wake Forest
clinched first overall and his teammate
Frank Hope was second. The
winning time was recorded at 24
minutes and 54 seconds. The University's
team captain, John Wilson,
made it into the fifth slot,
breaking up Wake's fourth and
fifth-place men in a very tight
race over the whole distance.

For the first time in a long time
Virginia placed five men in the top
ten. It was bunched up the whole
way with only ten seconds
separating the runners from finishing
positions 7-12.

The season is winless so far,
but there has been real improvement
shown over the past
few meets. This Friday the harriers
face Duke on the Blue Devils'
home course.
