Garrett's Run Beats Duke, 9-7;
Lions Overwhelm State, 35-22

Wake Forest caught Duke
looking ahead to this week's
clash with UNC, which would
have decided the ACC
championship, and upset the
Blue Devils, 9-7, in the big
game on the ACC slate.
Wake's Ken Garrett raced
28 yards for the winning
touchdown with 54 seconds
left, as the Deacons overcame a
7-3 deficit. Duke's Steve Jones
had scored in the first quarter
on a one-yard plunge to erase
the 3-0 lead Wake had gained
on a 26-yard field goal.
Jones and his counterpart,
Deacon tailback Frank Harsh,
were the offensive stars, with
Jones carrying 37 times for
201 yards, and Harsh picking
up 124 yards in 24 attempts.
Duke's loss eliminated the
Devils from contention for a
tie in the ACC and handed the
title to defending champion
UNC. Wake was psyched-up by
the firing of well-liked coach
Tom Harper last Monday.
Maryland either proved that
it was underrated or that
Clemson was overrated, as the
Terps crushed the Tigers 31-6
in what should have been a
tight contest.
Leading 10-3 at the
beginning of the fourth
quarter, the Terps recovered a
fumble by Tiger quarterback
Ken Pengitore, picked off a
Pengitore pass, and took
advantage of Bob Smith's
44-yard punt return to score
three times, deciding the issue.
In the East's biggest game
Saturday, the Wolfpack of N.C.
State played at Penn State,
with both teams struggling to
impress a bevy of post-season
bowl scouts.
The young Wolfpack started
slowly, and before you could
say "John Hufnagel," the
Nittany Lions led, 23-0.
Hufnagel led two scoring drives
and kicker Al Vitiello pounded
three field goals through the
uprights for the only scoring in
the first three periods.
State came back with
8-yard and 98-yard passes from
Bruce Shaw to Pat Kenney,
and a 3-yard plunge by Stan
Fritts. But the Lions scored
twice to put the game away.
