Final Cuts Set JV B'ball Squad,
Thirteen Contests On Schedule
By NED ROBERTS
This year's J.V. basketball
squad, which is the first such
team in the school's history,
will be hard pressed to improve
on last year's record of 11-5.
Coach Mike Schuler, who is
new at the University this year,
expects to run into some
trouble because of the team's
lack of height.
For the first time, the squad
this season was open to tryouts
by any undergraduate as a
result of the new N.C.A.A.
ruling allowing first-year men
to play all varsity sports.
Earlier this week the team
was cut down to ten players,
none of which is on
scholarship. This was to be the
final cut made, however, two
or possibly three players will
be added from the varsity later
in the season.
At the present moment all of
last year's scholarship earners
as well as first-year
blue-chippers Wally Walker and
Bob Sefcik are still on the
varsity.
Last year's first-year team
had the best freshman record
that anyone around here can
remember and provided a lot
of hope for the future of the
University basketball program.
The two freshman scholarship
players, signed last spring, are
also expected to bolster the
varsity for the next four years.
Consequently, because of the
nature of the basketball system
this year, there are only four
first-year men on the squad.
All of them are walk-ons
coming to the University
without scholarships.
The tallest of the group is
6-7 John Tirko, who came to
Charlottesville from Lincoln
High School in New Lenox, Ill.
The other first-year man with
some height is 6-6 forward
candidate Alton Mclntosh
from York, Va.
The remaining two first-year
men will both be fighting for
the guard spots. They are 6-0
Charles Bowers of Richmond
and 5-10 Paul Gabriel from
Atlanta, Ga.
Two second-year players
who saw considerable action
last year are 6-6 Ned Tiley and
6-7 Dick Davis. Both are
expected to be fighting for
starting positions all season
long.
The remaining players on the
team are Pat Culhane, a
third-year former All-Catholic
league from O'Conell High in
Arlington, and second-year
men 6-7 Arthur Stillmen and
6-0 Bubba Small.
It is impossible to tell as of
now who will be starting for
the J.V.'s.
