Crew Team Captures First

By PETE GLUBIAK

In capturing the intermediate
fours event at last Sunday's
Head of the Charles Regatta in
Boston, the Virginia crew
finally broke into the big time.

The Regatta, the most
prestigious crew event of the
fall in the United States, now
lays claim to being the largest
event in the country, with
1500 oarsmen and women
competing.

Composed of coxswain Thor
Strong, stroke Ron Binder,
Sandy Harris, Trennie Walker
and Jeff Scora, the Cavalier
crew won its event by six
seconds over 37 other boats in
its class. The competition
included fours from
Dartmouth, MIT, Harvard and
Princeton, by far the stiffest
competition any Virginia crew
has ever faced.

By placing first the four
gained recognition that has
eluded the team in its
seven-year existence. The team
has been a "name" crew in the
south for four years now and
for the past two years has done
well against intermediate
top-flight competition.

Nonetheless, Sunday must
rank as the most important day
in the history of the team, since
it has never met and beaten
teams of the quality faced in
the Head of the Charles.

The members of the Virginia
four had trained sparingly for
the event, sometimes spending
entire weeks rowing from six
to eight in the morning, only
to row again in the afternoon.

It is currently practicing on
the Rivanna Reservoir just
outside of town and with the
help of coach Paul Wilson is
looking forward to a
highly-successful opening.

All of the work the team
does now is aimed toward a
national small-college
championship in May, but
winning an event at the Head
of the Charles is quite some
prelude to start dreams with.
