Virginia Takes State Water
Polo Crown In 8-7 Squeaker

As all other athletic
attentions in Charlottesville
last weekend were focused out
of state, the State's swimming
attention was focused on the
second Annual State Water
Polo Championship in our new
U-Hall pool. With superior
conditioning a major factor in
the extra-wide pool and overall
talent on their side, the favored
Cavaliers won.
Unlike the first
Championships, this year there
were only six teams entered, a
new pool, and Virginia's
dominance was reduced. Last
year's finalists got first round
byes this year with the other
teams playing up to four games
in the two-day meet. Last
year's finalists U.Va. and W.
and L. regained their berths by
blasting hapless William and
Mary and newcomer VCU
respectively. VMI slipped into
third with a 14-11 win over
VCU. Richmond maintained its
cellar status by losing to W.
and M.
The best game of the
Championships was the finals
in which U.Va. swam past W.
and L. by a slim 8-7 margin. In
the game which was repeatedly
marred by fouls, Virginia's
superior physical conditioning
and W. and L.'s inconsistent
goalie clears, repeatedly
decided the flow of the game.
With All-State "hole-men"
Rich Sheehy of Virginia and
unanimously-selected Dick
Barber of W. and L. getting five
goals apiece, the balance of the
game had to be decided by the
other members of their squads.
