Stickmen To Visit Hopkins

The Cavalier lacrosse team faces
one of the teams with which it
shared the national title Saturday as
they take on perennially strong
Johns Hopkins at Baltimore's
Homewood Field.

Despite a poor start this season,
Hopkins can never be overlooked,
as they have won or shared the
national title for the last four years.

The Blue Jays will have revenge
on their mind after last year's game
in which Tom Duquette scored
seven goals to lead the Cavaliers to
a strong second half and a 15-8 win
over the previously undefeated
Hopkins team.

Hopkins is 2-3 on the season
thus far. They lost to Mount
Washington 14-3 and beat
Princeton 13-8 in their only two
battles with teams the Cavaliers
have faced. Virginia lost to the
Mounties 20-13 and topped
Princeton 18-2.

"Hopkins has had a slow start,"
noted Cavalier coach Glen Thiel,
"but they could explode on
Saturday. We will have to play at
the top of our game."

Mr. Thiel also says that
"Hopkins has a hustling unit. Their
first two midfield units can run
with anyone's, and Ken Dauses,
their goalie, looks as good as his
All-American form last year."

Hopkins also has a rugged
defense which outweighs the
Virginia attack by 30 pounds per
man. The Cavaliers will have to
count on quickness on attack to
penetrate the defense.

The attack accounted for 38
points in the three games against
Cornell, North Carolina, and
Dennison. Jay Connor led the way
with nine goals and nine assists.

Mr. Thiel will also count on
high-scoring midfielders Pete
Eldredge and Doug Cooper.
