ACC Recruiting Rules
Under Cloud Of Doubt

Atlantic Coast Conference
members are still tottering on
the brink of a crisis as the
December meeting of the
league's officials at
Greensboro, North Carolina
produced no decision on the
disputed entrance requirements
for prospective athletes.

Chaos Reigns

Only creating more confusion
on the subject, the conclave of
faculty chairmen from the eight
member schools voted down a
motion to lower recruiting
standards from a minimum of 800
on the college boards to a projected
1.6 grade point average by a 5-3
vote with South Carolina, Clemson,
and Maryland casting the nays.

A compromise measure making
a projected 1.75 the standard was
so defeated, leaving the matter in
chaos at the close of the meeting.
USC, Clemson, and presumably
Maryland will proceed with plans to
recruit grant-in-aid winners on the
basis of the 1.6 projected GPA.

Wait And See

According to Barney Cooke,
Sports Information Director, until
the members schools do use these
ineligible athletes in competition,
and it is reported to the league
officials, there is really nothing the
ACC can do. If no further action is
taken on the matter, next fall will
apparently see a showdown
between the two sides, possibly the
expulsion of the offending schools,
and the acceptance of applications
for new members of the Atlantic
Coast Conference.
