Malletmen Host Cornell

By Mark Pirrung

The University polo team
scored an easy victory over
Oxridge last Sunday, tallying
14 goals to the opponents 3
making their record 4-0.

The varsity will face its first
collegiate team this weekend,
when Cornell flies in its
"strong three" to play Sunday
afternoon at 2:30.

The Oxridge contingent were
young players who had not played
together for a long time and were
no match for the strong Virginia
offense.

Oxridge was awarded one goal
by handicap: Adie Von Gontard
and Lyle Graham, who are both
applying to the University, scored
one goal each in the first.

The Virginia pulled out in front
to stay in the opening minutes of
the game, scoring seven goals in the
first chukka.

Ray Norden put on a brilliant
performance, as good or better than
any recent college player, and
stunned the fans with brilliant
hitting and clairvoyant play sense.

Reid Graham and David Banks
were high scorers for the match,
putting in 6 goals each. Both
players exhibited good style and
never relinquished the pace.

Alternate Scores

John Stuart, the Virginia alternate,
played the second half, and
seemed to be suffering from the
"day after the night before"
syndrome. Stuart scored once in a
melee and commented that he felt
"snowed in" during the play.

Cornell Sunday

On Sunday November 11 the
Virginia riders will face the players
from Cornell as a serious threat to
their undefeated.

Argentinian Players

Riding for Cornell are two
foreign players from Argentina and
Pakistan. Christian Peron, who was
born in Argentina, sometimes called
the polo capital of the world, will
team up with Tahir Ali, a short,
tempestuous player from Pakistan, to
present their challenge.
