Groh Analyzes Freshman Team Effort

Upending a widely heralded
Maryland freshman football team
Friday, 36-33, the Virginia
Cavayearlings chalked up their
second straight win by "making the
breaks" and by playing
"opportunistic" football.
According to coach Al Groh, "the
team has a good thing starting to
work for us now and we want to
keep it going." Groh credited the
freshman victory to kicker Billy
Maxwell, who kicked for 15 points
including a game winning field goal
from 29 yards out with no time
remaining on the clock.

Halfback Kent Merritt once
again led Virginia in the offensive
department, grinding out 116 yards
on the ground. Connecting for two
touchdown passes, quarterback
Harrison Davis "ran the option well
and got the yardage in the big
situations."

Coach Groh was pleased with
the Cavayearlings' performance
against Maryland's running game
but stated that the defensive
secondary had encountered trouble
in defending against the long bomb
due to inexperienced personnel.

The Cavayearlings look for their
first win against the V.M.I.
freshmen Oct. 17. Coach Groh said
that the freshmen would have to
overcome their lack of consistency
to continue their winning tradition
against future opponents.
