To Face USC, Clemson

Baseballers Head South

Eliminated from the ACC baseball
race by last Tuesday's double
loss to Maryland, the Cavaliers, who
had high hopes and a five game
winning streak going into the game,
have dropped to the .500 mark in
conference play with a 7-7 record
going into this weekend's road trip.

But the Cavaliers are looking to
improve their conference position
when they invade South Carolina
this weekend, Jim West's nine has a
single game at Clemson Friday and
a doubleheader with the Gamecocks
of South Carolina Saturday.
Virginia split a twin bill with the
Tigers here earlier in the season and
won a 2-1 decision from the
Gamecocks the same weekend on
sophomore Mike Cubbage's two-run
homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior centerfielder Steve Bryant
continued his lusty hitting
against the Terps Tuesday totalling
four hits in six trips, including a
triple and a double, to push his
average to a lofty .398. The recent
Phi Beta Kappa initiate has a
slugging percentage of .627 based
on six doubles, two triples, three
homers and 22 singles. He also loads
the club in RBI's with 24.

Sophomore right fielder Terry
Dan knocked out consecutive
homers in the second game, one a
370-foot shot and the other just
edging inside the foul pole down
the left field line.

Hunter Hollar pitched well in
the first game although a first
inning streak of wildness was his
eventual undoing. Three walks and
a fielder's choice scored a Terp run
in the first, but Hollar settled down
to retire the next 12 batters in
order.

In fact it wasn't until the sixth
that Hollar allowed his first hit, a
first pitch leadoff triple by Jim
Norris who scored later on a
sacrifice fly to center. The Terps
scored another in the seventh on
two singles wrapped around a
sacrifice and then Gene Hiser
lowered the boom with a man on in
the eighth. Hiser's shot came off of
reliever Danny Merchak and
traveled 400 feet over the right
centerfield wall. It was his fifth

homer in the last seven games and
his ninth of the season.

Ed Kihm suffered his first loss
of the season in the second game
after having posted four victories.
Kihm was a quick replacement for
Rick Spigone who pulled a muscle
in his pitching arm during pre-game
warmup, Both had pitched full
same wins over Duke last Saturday.
