Ski Team In Action
By Brewster Moseley
Tomorrow afternoon at one, the
second annual University of Virginia
Invitational Ski Meet will be
held at the Homestead in Hot
Springs.
Last year, while over one hundred
spectators and television and
news teams looked on, the University
Ski Team dominated the first
intercollegiate ski race ever held in
this state. Beating teams from four
colleges and entrants from eleven
states and three countries, Virginia
placed five racers in the top ten to
win the meet.
Under the direction of Sepp
Kober, Homestead Ski School director
and former Austrian Olympic
Team coach, the race this year
will consist of a 14-gate giant
slalom with both a men's and
women's division. Over twenty
college teams from five states have
been invited to participate.
Following the Homestead meet,
the team will travel to Banner Elk,
North Carolina on Monday for the
Southern Conference Intercollegiate
Meet at Beach Mountain.
Hosted by Lees-McRae Junior
College, the meet will consist of a
downhill competition on Monday
and a giant slalom on Tuesday.
Last year, at the end of its first
season, the team won a total of 22
medals and three state-wide trophies
in four races to become a
major southern ski power. With a
good showing in the Homestead
and Beach Mountain meets, the
University Ski Team could continue
its undisputed dominance of state
racing, and very possibly emerge as
the best in the South.
