'Scooter' Katz Runs On And On

"He's so quiet you don't know
he is around until you see the
points up on the scoreboard," is
how Coach Lou Onesty sums up
stellar distance runner Rick Katz.

Katz, a fourth-year man, has run
cross country, indoor and outdoor
track since he first entered the
University. A product of James
Blair High in Williamsburg, he is in
the math honors program and has
earned the privilege to live on the
Lawn this year.

"Scooter" to his teammates,
Rick really did not start running
here on his track credentials. "Not
possessing great natural ability he
has overcome any deficits through
hard work and a deep pride in
representing the University," said
Coach Onesty.

Some indication of his worth to
the Virginia track program was his
recent eighth place finish in the
ACC Cross Country Tournament.
His individual effort paced the
Cavaliers to fourth place in the
team standings.

Katz has lowered his times
considerably since he began running
here. A glance through the record
books shows that Rick has dropped
more than one minute from his
two-mile time and more than 20
seconds from his mile time. Now he
runs the mile in about 4:28 and the
two-mile in about 9:29.

This fall he captained the
Harriers for the second straight
season. He will co-captain the
indoor and outdoor track campaigns
with weightman Al Sinesky.

Coach Onesty hopes that Rick
will be able to enter the U.S. Track
and Field Competition at Penn
State prior to Thanksgiving break.
