In Colonel's Cup
Ruggers Toppled By D.C.

After the dust had settled and
the champagne downed from the
Colonel's Cup, the Virginia Rugby
Club drove away from Haine's
Point, Washington Sunday with a
win, a loss, and a tie. The A team
came up on the short end of a
match for the first time this season
as they lost to the Washington
Rugby Club, 14-12. The Turques (B
Team) tied 3-3, while the C squad
won 11-3.
In the feature match Virginia A
rallied unsuccessfully in the closing
minutes as several late scoring
attempts were unsuccessful.
Virginia's only first half score came
in the opening minutes as Paul
Bishop and Tom Boyd hooked up
on a 60 yard try play. Washington
exploded for three tries and a
conversion to take a 11-3 halftime
lead.
Virginia came to life in the
second period as Tom Furniss hit
on a 20 yard penalty kick.
Moments later Byron "Train"
Shankman plunged into the try
zone from three yards out with half
the Washington squad on his back
Washington's Bernie Seton
on a 35 yard drop kick in the
second period which proved to be
the coup de grace. Terry Daniel's
late try was not enough and left
Virginia with a 11-12 setback.
Washington, by virtue of its win,
won the Colonel's Cup, a trophy
presented in . . of the first
president of the D.C. Club.
The Turques continued their
undefeated skein by rallying late in
the second half to tie Washington B
3-3.
But the Turques refused to call
it quits in the second half. Finally
late in the contest, Mark Storm
booted a straight-on 30 yard
penalty kick.
