Well, the holiday is over in the
land of the pigskin prognosticators.
Things have been mighty easy over
the past two weeks, and now, as
they say, "The rent is due."
Success, to say the least, has
been our pass word. Mighty mind
Bruce Franzel went undefeated last
weekend, foreseeing the upset of the
week, Boston College over Navy.
Out of his crystal ball also came the
prediction of Purdue over Notre
Dame. Surprisingly, Ted McKean,
now in second place, was the only
other to see the triumph of the
Boilermakers. Bob Cullen must
have had his grandmother make his
picks, as the dropped into the cellar.
This week, he may revive, as at least
six of the ten picks are hotly
disputed.
In the Alabama-Mississippi
battle, the favorite appears to be
Alabama, by a slim 4-3 margin.
Bear Bryant's charges have not
shown themselves as mighty as past
Crimson squads, just edging
Southern Mississippi last week by a
field goal. They will have to come
into their own to get by the Rebels
in a squeaker.
Duke plays Maryland at neutral
site Norfolk, Va. The Blue Devils
were pasted by Michigan last week,
31-10, and the Terps didn't do
much better against Syracuse,
32-14. It should be a tight contest,
but the consensus has Duke, 5-2.
VMI versus Villanova poses
another problem in prediction. The
Keydets showed very little against
Virginia, but Villanova is yet to pan
out as a top flight team. In a battle
of losers, the favorite is Villanova.
Clemson, the top pick of the
Atlantic Coast Conference prior to
the season, looks for its first win
against Georgia Tech. The boys say
they will get it, despite playing
away from home.
Minnesota should topple the
Demon Deacons of Wake Forest,
although several loyal ACC
prognosticators stick with Wake.
Another close one may prove to be
SMU versus N.C. State. Look for
the Mustangs in that one; the
Wolfpack has trouble out west.
Finally, Georgia should handle
South Carolina with case, and
romps should be Michigan over
Navy, and Purdue over
Northwestern.
