Track Season Opens Saturday
With Springfield's Cindermen

A youthful Virginia track squad
will open its 1968 outdoor campaign
in a dual meet this Saturday
against Springfield College of
Massachusetts.

Co-captain Peter Petit and
Jeff Calamos lead a contingent
of Cavalier sprinters that include
Tom Baker, Joe Siegal, and newcomer
Ron Shorb.

Virginia's hurdle crew will
feature John Heagle and Ed Campbell
in the highs, and Norm Puckett
and ex-gridder Dennis Borchers
in the 440 yard intermediate
hurdles.

Virginia's hopes in the half mile
were dealt a severe blow earlier
this week when its top runner,
Phil Stafford) sustained a foot
injury that will sideline him for a
month.

In the past Virginia has been
weak in the field and weight events.
As of now, however, this is the
strong point of the team. Putting
the shot will be indoor state champion,
Al Sinesky, who will also
toss the discus.

Fresh from the hardcourt, Mike
Wilkes will compete in the javelin
and discus

First-year man John Morris,
who placed in both the State
and ACC indoor meets, will be
the man to watch in the quarter
mile.

In the broad jump, first-year
man Jim Shannon, who placed
third in the state and sixth in
the ACC, has done an outstanding
job and would be the number
one jumper in most colleges.

Yet at Virginia Shannon is overshadowed
by Mike Harvey, ACC
champ and fifth, place finisher in
last weeks NCAA Indoor Championships.
