Devils, Tar Heels Featured
In Fencers' Weekend Meet
By Hugh Antrim
Once only for the likes of Robin
Hood, Zorro, and the original
Cavalier, the art of fencing is
now being preserved through the
efforts of Coach Herman Walner
and the Virginia fencing team.
Anyone inclined to see the preservation
of this skill should be at
Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday
morning for matches against
Duke and North Carolina.
Captain Rick Lasser, a member
of the All-ACC team last year,
leads the swordsmen and has compiled
an 8-3 record in the foil
division. The epee and sabre competitions
are headed by John Jackson
and Bob Cohen respectively.
Perhaps the brightest performance
of the season was turned
in by Steve Hattin in a match
against Clemson last weekend. A
first-year man. Hattin overcame
last year's ACC champ, 5-4. A
solid in the foil
division, he has achieved an 8-3
seasonal record.
Coach Herman Walner is an expert
fencer in his own right. NCAA
champion in the in 1953 and
second place finisher in the foil
in 1954, Mr. Walner now attends
the Medical School.
The swordsmen have earned
themselves a 4-2 overall record,
and they are now 2-2 in the conference.
The fencing team needs
those two victories on Saturday,
and they need the support of the
University in getting them.
