Gymnasts Won Tri-Meet At Frostburg Over Weekend
After giving up part of their
big weekend, the Cavalier
gymnasts beat Frostburg College
and William and Mary College at
Frostburg, Maryland. The University's
score was 85 to William
and Mary's 74 and Frostburg's
28.
There were four competitors
from each team in each of the seven
events and only the top three
scores for each team were added
for the team's total scores.
Co-captain Dick Topping turned
in inspiring performances, capturing
first place in free exercises
and second place on the trampoline.
After arriving late at the meet
Eric Adamson proved to be the
outstanding performer of the afternoon,
taking a first on the still
rings, a second in free exercise,
and a second on the long horse.
The other co-captain, Tim
Fisher, contributed to the team's
efforts by copping second in the
side horse and second on the parallel
bars.
Third place on the parallel bars
and first on the side horse were
won by first-year man Rich Lutz.
Others helping to win the tri-meet
were Bob Simmons with a
second in the high bar, Mike
Rosner with a win on the trampoline
event, and Chip McIntosh with
third places in the still rings and
high bar.
Coach Ed Ehler termed the meet
his athletes' best team performance
of the year. Earlier this year the
gymnasts had lost to William and
Mary.
This weekend sees the far traveling
gymnasts going all the way to
Gainsville, Florida to compete in
the SIGL championships. The
team that wins this meet will go to
the Nationals, and the top three
finishers in each event will also
compete in the Nationals.
