Bruins Remain On Top,
ACC Teams Closing In

While UCLA may be the
kingpin of college basketball,
the Atlantic Coast Conference
is surely the top kingdom.

The weekly Top Ten
includes no less than three
ACC teams, headed by
Maryland, who defeated
Georgia Tech and Syracuse in
winning its own holiday
tournament.

One place below is N.C.
State, who dropped from last
week's third despite being idle.
The two meet Super Bowl Day,
Jan. 14 in a nationally televised
game.

North Carolina arose from
twelfth after beating three
teams, most notably
winning Hawaii's Rainbow
Classic.

Ironically the league leader
as of Jan. 3, Virginia, was not
mentioned in the poll.

As has been the case for the
last half-decade, John
Wooden's Bruins are number
one, collecting all 34 first-place
votes.

Marquette's hold on the
number two spot appears
shaky. The Warriors defeated
Rice easily, 71-40, but were
forced into overtime and
double overtime in sneaking by
Northwestern and Wisconsin,
respectively.
