Duke Crushes 'Hoos, 20-41, As
Meyer Takes Individual Honors

By STEVE GASKE

In a meet held Friday
afternoon on the Faulkner
Course, the Virginia cross
country team suffered a
somewhat demoralizing loss to
Duke by a score of 41-20.

Phil Meyer continued his
winning ways as he took
individual honors with a
winning time of 25:25.7. Duke
sent a "rabbit" out early in the
race to test Meyer's pace, but
the unfazed. Meyer wore him
down and went on to win by
over a minute.

Going into the meet, the
Cavs were very optimistic
about their chances for besting
the ACC-favorite Blue Devils,
considering both the strength
of the Virginia team this year
and the fact that Duke's ace
runners Bob Wheeler, Steve
Wheeler, and Scott Eden were
not in the lineup.

Bob Wheeler is passing up
the cross country season after
his appearance in the
Olympics.

Despite the Cavs' optimism,
Duke swept the six places
behind Meyer. Bob Braden led
the deluge with a second-place
time of 26:48.

Virginia's second finisher
was Donal Day, who finished
eighth overall. Joe Wood
finished behind him in ninth
place. After a tenth-place Duke
finisher, Joe Steinberger and
Bob Gravell came in eleventh
and twelfth respectively.

Although most of the
Virginia runners ran their best
times of the season, the team
was noticeably weakened by
the loss of mainstays Mike Pace
and Bob Peckt to leg injuries.
Both should be back, however,
when the Cavs travel to
Blacksburg for a meet against
VPI, Thursday.
