Trackmen Stomp Wake, Lafayette,
N.C.State, Carolina Overpowering

Phil Meyer's tendinitis, an
abbreviated meet, and two
scholarship-laden Tobacco
Road squads have collaborated
to keep the varsity track squad
on the wrong side of the .500
mark, five meets into the
season.

The trackmen's record now
stands at 2-3 following a 112-51
1/2 loss to UNC in Chapel Hill
on March 31. The weekend
before the holiday, they had
pulled even with easy victories
over Lafayette and Wake and a
controversial defeat at the
hands of N. C. State.

In that outing the
cancellation of the six-mile run
and the steeplechase, Virginia
specialties, due to the weather,
did nothing to help the Cavs,
who went down 100 1/2-89
1/2. Wake finished third with
50 while Lafayette managed a
mere 20.

Meyer's incipient tendon
problems also took their toll,
although he was able to gut out
a respectable 4:17 in the mile.

Against UNC, dash man
Kent Merritt was the 'Hoos'
brightest spot for the
afternoon, as Meyer sat out.
Merritt took the 100 in 9.7,
but was yanked from the 220
by Coach Lou Onesty, who
was afraid he, too, might wind
up on the disabled list.

Pole vaulter Jim McClurg
narrowly missed another
Cavalier first with his 14'
effort. His Tar Heel opponent
bettered him with a 14' 6" on
his last try.

Six-miler Donal Day's
30:59 was good enough for a
school record but not for a
first. Teammate Mike Pace
followed with a 31:17 for
third.

An Easters weekend
triangular with Duke and
Richmond this Friday is the
next encounter for the
cindermen.
