State, Carolina Victorious
In North-South Classic

BY CLARK EMERSON

Though all four teams
were from below the
Mason-Dixon Line, a
doubleheader in Charlotte,
N.C. this weekend was billed
the North-South Classic and
southern tempers definitely
flared.

With four seconds left in
Saturday night's finale, Coach
Tales Locke pulled his
Clemson team off the court
after Jive Brown and North
Carolina's Charles Waddell
traded insults near the Clemson
bucket. A few minutes earlier
Locke had drawn a technical
foul for protesting a call.

The sixth-ranked Tar Heels
routed the Tigers, 84-69.

In the doubleheader's other
half, undefeated and David
Thompson-led N.C. State
polished off independent
Georgia Tech, 118-94.
Thompson's 36 points, 11 over
his conference-leading average,
and Tommy Burleson's 24
pushed State to its 19th
victory.

Friday's action in Charlotte
included North Carolina
defeating Georgia Tech, 107-72,
and State struggling to a
surprisingly close 68-61 win
over Clemson, with Thompson
scoring 30 points.
