Duke
Scrambles
ACC Race

BY DOUG DOUGHTY

Sensational second-half
performances by guard Gary
Melchionni and forward Bob
Fleischer propelled Duke to an
85-81 upset of third-ranked
Maryland, Saturday afternoon,
at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Melchionni, who had 11
points in the first half, erupted
for 28 second half points in a
17-25 shooting performance
from the floor. Fleisher, only
a part-time starter, had the
ominous task of guarding Len
Elmore, the Terrapins'
devastating center. Fleischer
had 15 rebounds and held
Elmore to eight rebounds and
only a single point.

The victory moved Duke
within one-half game of fourth
place Virginia in the league
race. The Devils are 9-9 overall
and 2-4 in the ACC. The Cavs
are 3-4 in league play.

Maryland's loss pushed the
Terps (4-3) out of a second
place tie with idle North
Carolina (4-2). N.C. State,
victor over Virginia, is still
undefeated in league play.
